Overall Equipment Effectiveness
OEE Availability
We are a manufacturing operation, like many of our customers. We measure Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and use the results to focus improvement projects. OEE looks at the Three Pillars of Availability, Performance and Quality, within each of these pillars are what we call the Six Big Losses. Breakdowns and Changeovers (Set Ups) are losses within Availability. Minor Stoppages and Reduced Speed Running are Performance losses. Defects and Reduced Yield are the two losses within Quality.
We have a few questions on how your manufacturing operation collects the data you use in calculating OEE and in particular the Availability data. If you can take a minute to answer and submit a short survey it would help us a lot, as we look to see how the IIOT will shape our products in the future.
Availability is calculated as Planned Production Time - 2 of the 6 Big Losses.
- Loss 1 - Breakdown
- Loss 2 - Set Up & Adjustment
Planned Production Time is not the “ultimate” availability of the machine. I guess the Ultimate Availability would be 24/7 if there was enough work load and the machine never needed maintenance.
